NHL18 Franchise - Finnish league edition
https://imgur.com/a/Mgy77WH I'm still with NHL18 and wanted to go further with Franchise mode. So I recreated Finnish teams to be used in the Franchise mode. Since the top Finnish leagues don't have 31 teams, this has even a few teams from the third highest league. I also brought back Jokerit from KHL.
-- Cities --
Cities are not accurate for all teams, since only Liiga cities are included in the game. So they were usually chosen by the closest Liiga city for the rest with a couple of creative exceptions.
-- Rosters --
The rosters are not up to date since a huge amount of players would have to be created.. But I did include most of the finnish NHL/AHL players to their earlier teams. Other than Liiga teams were filled mostly with Liiga leftovers and players from other European series and, but so that the overall would somewhat reflect their talent comparing to the Liiga teams. This of course then required replacing AHL players also with lower tier European players and caused some issues with the salary cap on.. but overall I'm pretty happy on how this ended up. It's going to be interesting to see how the bottom tier teams catch up after drafting a couple Franchise level players! I'm going to start playing this tomorrow.

Team Breakdowns The Hockey Writers
Canada
Coach Don Hay and Head Scout Kevin Prendergast didn’t have as many easy choices to make this year as they may have had in past years, as this year’s camp was about as wide open as you’re ever going to see in a Canadian selection camp. If you look at the roster, you could say that only about five players were locks to make this team. Using the 22-man roster we have now, that means that there were 17 spots up for grabs. For a Canadian national hockey team, that is an extremely high amount of open slots. Just to show how wide open it was, Coach Hay said afterwards that Tanner Pearson – the Ontario Hockey League’s points leader by a mile – was one of the last players to make the team. Before this season, most people had never even heard of Tanner Pearson. When a Canadian hockey fan thought of the Barrie Colts, they immediately thought of fellow Team Canada forward Mark Scheifele, and that was it. There would have been no mention of Pearson, not even a thought. Well, that’s all changed pretty quickly hasn’t it? Some analysts are saying that Canada could be considered an underdog in this years tournament in Alberta, on home ice. The Americans may have the more “visually appealing” roster, so that must make them the favourite, right? Oh, if only life were that simple.
Finland
Finland could be the biggest surprise of the tournament, in spite of having a very young roster. Talented players currently part of NHL organizations such as Mikael Granlund (drafted 9th overall 2010 by the Minnesota Wild), Teemu Pulkkinen (111th overall 2010 by the Detroit Red Wings) and Joel Armia (16th overall 2011 by the Buffalo Sabres) will look to lead the team to its first medal in the tournament since 2006. This year’s Finnish entry is considered their most talented in years, and presents a very strong chance to end that drought; perhaps even upsetting Canada along the way.

10. Mark Visentin, G, Canada (Phoenix Coyotes) Canada has struggled in the crease area at recent WJC tournaments, including Visentin's performance late in last year's event. He'll be under a lot of pressure to bounce back this time around.
9. Aleksander Barkov, C, Finland (2013 draft eligible) He's only 16, and won't be eligible for the NHL draft until 2013, but Barkov is the real deal. There's a good chance he plays on Finland's third line (at least), so he may become a factor here.
8. Mikhail Grigorenko, C, Russia (2012 draft eligible) Arguably the most dynamic player in the QMJHL this season, Grigorenko will look to improve his '12 draft stock (or at least maintain it). Not everyone is sold on his upside, so he needs to stand out.
7. Emerson Etem, RW, USA (Anaheim Ducks) There is plenty of scoring potential on Team USA this time around, but the spotlight could be squarely on WHL second-leading scorer Etem. The California speedster has 30 goals in 34 games this year.
6. Jaden Schwartz, LW, Canada (St. Louis Blues) Seeking redemption here, Schwartz will look for better luck after fracturing his ankle in the tournament a year ago. The speedy sophomore has 18 points in 13 games at Colorado College this season.
5. Evgeny Kuznetsov, LW/RW, Russia (Washington Capitals) Expected to join the Capitals next season, Kuznetsov is among the KHL scoring leaders in 2011-12 for Traktor Chelyabinsk. A strong showing here will convince the Caps he doesn't need AHL seasoning.
4. Jack Campbell, G, USA (Dallas Stars) A bit like Visentin, Campbell will have a big spotlight on him in this tourney. He has been a clutch performer for Team USA but he may look over his shoulder now with John Gibson challenging him.
3. Mika Zibanejad, C, Sweden (Ottawa Senators) Ottawa's second-line center of the near future (likely in 2012-13) had a nine-game NHL trial earlier this season, so he should be ready to put on quite a display for Swedish fans and Sens scouts alike here.
2. Nail Yakupov, RW, Russia (2012 draft eligible) Is Yakupov the best player outside the NHL today? Is he the consensus No. 1 pick in 2012? These questions may be answered in this year's WJC. He has the ability to take over this entire tournament.
1. Mikael Granlund, C/W, Finland (Minnesota Wild) If Yakupov isn't the best non-NHLer in the world today, Granlund just might be. He's 19, so he's been through this before. A good bet to join the Wild next season, Granlund could be a huge factor here.

For some of the stats, I have the value itself, and then also their ranking on their team in that stat in parentheses. So for example, for shots per game you would see 4 (5), which would mean they take 4 shots a game on average, and that ranks fifth on the team. For defensive prospects, you will see both their team rank and the rank among defenseman on the team. Using shots per game as an example, if you saw 4 (5,2), that would mean they take 4 shots a game on average, which ranks fifth on the team as a whole, and ranks second among defenseman on the team. Additionally, with TOI/GP, the rankings will read (team rank, rank for forwards/defenseman).

Kingston added a lot of pieces for the playoff push, and Paquette saw his role fall from a top pairing defenseman to a bottom four defensemen. Paquette still has a very good defensive game for the OHL, but the lack of any offensive improvement this season cast doubt on any NHL potential. |

Biography
Finland-born and raised Teemu Pulkkinen was selected 111th overall in the 4th round of the 2010 Entry Draft by Detroit. His pre-North America hockey was spent in the SM-Liiga (Finland's highest professional hockey league) playing for the storied Jokerit Helsinki. Drawing NHL attention from both his league and national team play (representing Finland at the U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels), he was selected by Detroit in 2010. Detroit opted to have Pukkinen continue to develop in Finland for the next two season before bringing him over to continue his growth and allow him to adapt to the North American game in 2013. He has bounced between Detroit's AHL-affiliate in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the NHL since coming over. Pulkkinen put up 120 points in 177 games in the AHL. The 2015-'16 season was his first season spent fully up with the NHL roster, but was shortened by injury. Waived by Detroit towards the end of the 2016 Training Camp, Minnesota claimed him and is looking for him to produce immediately at the NHL level for the 2016-'17 season.
Style of Play
Teemu Pulkkinen is a lumbering skater who possesses a big shot with deadly accuracy. His prefers to find open ice, and operates best with space in the offensive zone. He struggles with both board play and physical play in general - perhaps a byproduct of the open European game that still haunts his game even now. Creative on the puck, Pulkkinen has good accuracy with his passes, and shows genuine flashes of brilliance in delivering passes. He is willing to shoot, but he has a good understanding of when to pass for a higher percentage shot. His skating leaves something to bee desired, and his lack of speed and agility is perhaps his biggest knock against him at the NHL level. At just 24 years of age, Pulkkinen skates as if he's 10 years older.
Defensively, he struggles with positioning and control. Often caught out of position early in his career, he has improved his positional play in the last two years. He prefers to use aggressive stick play to disrupt opponents rather than take the body or remove space. Pulkkinen rarely lays down to block a shot. He can pinch deep to offer support along the boards and in the corners, but is unwilling to commit fully in taking an aggressive attack on loose pucks within his zone of defensive responsibility.
There's some upside with Pulkkinen, but he needs to develop a more nuanced understanding of the game on both ends of the ice to be an effective full-time NHL player. While not exactly a total liability, his defensive issues make it hard to see him going up against the top line every night. If he's willing to commit the body more frequently, and understand his role in the transition game, Pulkkinen may develop into a legitimate 40 point/+15 player - but that's a big "if" with a lot of things needing improvement.

Team Breakdowns The Hockey Writers
Finland could be the biggest surprise of the tournament, in spite of having a very young roster. Talented players currently part of NHL organizations such as Mikael Granlund (drafted 9th overall 2010 by the Minnesota Wild), Teemu Pulkkinen (111th overall 2010 by the Detroit Red Wings) and Joel Armia (16th overall 2011 by the Buffalo Sabres) will look to lead the team to its first medal in the tournament since 2006. This year’s Finnish entry is considered their most talented in years, and presents a very strong chance to end that drought; perhaps even upsetting Canada along the way.
The Americans boast a combination of unparalleled goaltending (Campbell and Gibson) plus an explosive offense. This is a team with the skill to compete against any team, be it Canada or Russia. Emerson Etem has the ability to take over games with his skill. Their defence will get the job done, and expect Adam Clendening to be activated and given the liberty to move the puck. Forbert and Tinordi have proven themselves and will be able to shut down the likes of Mikael Granlund and Jonathan Huberdeau. This is the team to beat right now.

From the 26th to the 31st of December, year after year, hockey players gather in Davos for the Spengler Cup. This tournament, played in the
Vaillant Arena, (also called the Cathedral of Hockey) is the oldest invitational hockey competition in the world. It is also the only European hockey event to be broadcast live on TSN and RDS, giving our friends across the pond a window into our hockey culture. Here's

The tournament itself
Let's be clear right away: the venue is an integral part to the success of the Spengler Cup. Ask hockey players from around the world to spend the year-end holidays in the middle of Siberia and few will come. Ask them to spend it in a resort in the middle of the Swiss Alps and they might agree more. The games are all played in the Vaillant Arena, a monument in wood and glass that was built in 1978, before which the tournament took place outdoors. Over 7'000 spectators come to watch the game in an atmosphere that is always described as “good-natured”. Everyone is here to watch some hockey during the holidays and have a nice time.
The teams are divided in two groups of three, named Torriani and Cattini after local hockey legends. After a round robin, the teams placed second and third in each group play each other for a place in the semi-finals, where they are joined by the winners of both groups. The winners of the semi-finals progress, as one may expect, to the final.
The teams
Torriani Group
After a fairly shaky start to the season, Geneva, the title-holders in this year's Spengler Cup, have come back to a high level in the Swiss league. The returns of North Americans Matthew Lombardi and Cody Almond, who didn't quite cut it in the NHL, certainly helped. This team will interest North Americans, as it has a Canadian coach who has always decided to play a Canadian playing style (very physical in comparison to other European teams) with North American players. The team has former NHLers such as Paul Ranger, brothers Tom and Taylor Pyatt, Matt D'Agostini, Alexandre Picard, Matthew Lombardi, Cody Almond and Francis Bouillon (loaned specially for the Spengler), as well as Swiss-Canadians Tim Traber and Daniel Vukovic. Certainly, as title-holders, a team to look out for.
This team, a monument of Finnish hockey, has recently been transfered to the KHL. They are currently second in the league. While I have to confess I don't follow the KHL that much (maybe others such as LocksTheFox might help with that), they seem on the basis of that ranking, in the second best league in the world, to be among the favorites of this competition.
This team was among the biggest in the KHL when it was created, winning the Gagarin Cup in 2011 and the KHL regular season the two previous years. While they seem to be a bit more in the middle these days, they are still a strong team, almost all-Russian. It may be of particular interest to NHL fans that this was the team Alexander Radulov fled to when he decided he was fed up with country music, but he is no more with them.
Cattini Group
Just before starting their annual exhibition, HC Davos lost their place as leaders in the Swiss league, which they had held almost from the start of the season. Bad omen? Maybe, but fact is this team will be strong. They have a strong, balanced team, under the helm of legendary coach Arno Del Curto, who has been in place since 1996. This club is also known in North America as the lockout home of Joe Thornton and Rick Nash, or as the place where Joe Thornton met his wife, or as the place where Joe Thornton actually won a cup . They are famous in Switzerland for being a team with a particularly beautiful and flowing style of play, all in passing and moving. Them being at home and not having to acclimatise to playing at 6'000 feet above the sea also helps.
This is quite definitely not the Team Canada you are used to seeing. It is a selection of the best Canadian players in the European leagues. This season might be a low point because there are progressively less and less Canadians coming across the pond, and because to of the most Canadianised teams, Geneva and Zagreb, will be competing on their own. Still, there is quite a lot of talent on display, such as (please don't snicker) Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Jim Vandermeer, Marc-André Gragnani or Crosby's former linemate Marc-Antoine Pouliot – and that's just for those playing in Switzerland. The team also includes rather more AHLers than in recent memory, and it will be interesting to see how they adapt to the big ice. Full roster here. This team will certainly not be as dominant as their 2012 forefathers, when the lockout players had made the competition a shoo-in for Canada, but they are never to be discounted. The team is coached by Guy Boucher, currently SC Bern's coach.
Medvescak is the Croat hockey team in the KHL. It has brought enormous hockey attendances to what is traditionally a soccer and maybe basketball country, and has given a new career plan to a number of former AHLers or borderline NHLers, such as Jonathan Cheechoo. But Cheechoo's gone, and the other Canadians aren't as good, and Medvescak are currently bottom of their conference in the KHL. Slovakia Slovakia in their 2012 World Juniors medal quest may feel like they are skating uphill on a Red Bull Crashed Ice track with perennial powerful hockey nations Canada, Russia, Sweden, USA and Finland obstructing their path. While their likelihood of seeing semi-final action in Calgary’s Saddledome is highly improbable, with talented players like Tomas Jurco, Marek Tverdon, Martin Marincin and Martin Gernat, they could prove anything but a pushover should a team take them too lightly.
Finland
Finland could be the biggest surprise of the tournament, in spite of having a very young roster. Talented players currently part of NHL organizations such as Mikael Granlund (drafted 9th overall 2010 by the Minnesota Wild), Teemu Pulkkinen (111th overall 2010 by the Detroit Red Wings) and Joel Armia (16th overall 2011 by the Buffalo Sabres) will look to lead the team to its first medal in the tournament since 2006. This year’s Finnish entry is considered their most talented in years, and presents a very strong chance to end that drought; perhaps even upsetting Canada along the way.

Sweden consistently sends high-quality hockey teams to all international tournaments they participate in. Whether it’s the Olympics, World Championships, or the World Juniors, they’re teams always push for a medal. This year’s World Junior team may not be as high-profile as teams they’ve had in past years, but there is still a lot of talent, and plenty of goal-scoring ability. There is a legitimate chance that Sweden could surprise everyone, and push their way into a medal game. Team Sweden finished in fourth place last year, after falling to Team USA in the bronze medal game. They’re expected to finish in a similar position once again, as Canada, Russia, and the U.S are the favourites to win the medals. However, like all Swedish teams, there are still players worth keeping an eye on.
